There are a couple of different types of data we can use to measure our progress:

Quantitative data is numerical and can be measured. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, your quantitative data would be your time, distance, pace, etc.

Qualitative data is more descriptive and can’t be measured as easily. For example, if your goal is to become a better writer, your qualitative data would be the feedback you get from others, how often you write, etc.

Both types of data are important in measuring progress toward your goal. Quantitative data is great for seeing how you’re doing in a measurable way, but qualitative data can give you insights into why you’re making or not making progress.

Once you’ve collected some data, it’s time to start analyzing it, to ensure you have the greatest possible data, you should prepare and clean it. 4. Impact data: This is the data that measures the broader impact of your goal. In the example above, impact data would be the total revenue generated by your new clients.

You need all four types of data to measure progress toward your goal, but input and output data are the most important. Without input and output data, it’s impossible to know whether or not you’re making progress. Impact and outcome data are important, but they’re secondary to input and output data.

4. Relevant: A relevant goal is a goal that is important and aligned with your overarching goals. It answers the question “Why do I want to achieve this goal?”

5. Time-based: A time-based goal is a goal that has a deadline or timeframe associated with it.

Data is the lifeblood of your business, but it’s not always clean and ready to use.
